Physics

Your destination: Degree-level study at UoA

Physics is perhaps the most fundamental of all sciences. All modern science and technology is underpinned by physics.

If you wish to better understand the nature of matter and energy, to train in experimental methods and to learn more about the mathematical analysis of physical processes, then Physics is the subject for you.

Begin your journey into Physics by way of the TFC:

Semester One

TFCPHYSICS 91F: Foundation Physics 1

This is an introductory course for those who have not previously studied Physics. Topics include the nature of light; wave motion; basic mechanics of motion in a straight line, including the concepts of momentum and energy; and an introduction to heat.

Assessments:

  • Coursework: 60%
  • Final Examination: 40%

Timetable:

  • Lecture: three one-hour lectures per week
  • Laboratory: one two-hour practical per week

Semester Two

PHYSICS 92F: Foundation Physics 2

This second foundation course is for those who understand the basic mechanics of motion in a straight line. It encompasses further mechanics, including equilibrium, projectile motion, rotational motion, and gravitation, and electromagnetism, including electrostatics, elementary circuits, and the effects of magnetic fields.

Assessments

  • Assignments: 15%
  • Laboratories: 15%
  • Tests: 20%
  • Final Exam: 50%

Timetable

  • Lecture: three one-hour lectures per week
