Department of Physics

Welcome from the Head of Department

Kia Ora; Welcome to the Department of Physics at the University of Auckland

Our department is a fantastic place to study physics. Our students work in a friendly and supportive environment and we are proud to see our graduates go on to exciting, meaningful jobs in New Zealand and internationally.

The Department is committed to providing a great student experience, and the BSc in Physics can lead to the industry-focused BSc(Hons) in Photonics or BSc(Hons) in Medical Physics and Imaging Technologies. Students seeking a deeper understanding of physics can pursue a BSc(Hons) degrees in physics, and the research-based MSc and PhD, and the department makes a major contribution to the Geophysics major.

Physics opens the door to a huge range of opportunities, and people in many fields need a sound understanding of the physical world. In fact, the variety of problems being tackled by the Department’s researchers illustrates how physics underpins the natural world and biological systems. Auckland physicists discover planets around distant stars, work on understanding the Earth's climate, probe the interior of volcanoes, and determine how bacterial colonies grow and thrive. We use our knowledge to create new tools and technologies, building instruments to diagnose illnesses in living tissue, measure turbulent airflow around wind turbines, and creating powerful new laser technologies.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the department or our activities.
