Studies of ferromagnetic thin films were significantly delayed by the need to undertake a full finite-size scaling analysis of the effect of vacancies on the location of the phase transition. Preparation of the revised manuscript is now in progress.
During the year Associate Professor Malcolm Grimson was approached to write a review article on the modeling of microbial growth by Molecular Biosystems, a significant Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) journal. As this would involve the promotion of our work in a major journal, the offer was accepted.
The manuscript, written with Leonie Pipe, is in the final stages of preparation. In the light of some encouraging preliminary results for fibre bundle models of fracture, Chandra Vithanage has decided to undertake experimental studies of the elastic failure of soft solids as part of her PhD programme.
The experimental programme is still in the planning stages, but will initially focus on butter. The experiments will be done in conjunction with Food Science.

This research involved development of thermodynamic theory of light scattering from solutions of macromolecules; development of theory and bioinformatics analysis of 'quasi-speciation' in origin of genetic coding; further development of operation of Turing-type reaction-diffusion mechanism in evolutionary 'quasi-speciation'.
