Underwater acoustics

The extension of a wavefront model for underwater sound propagation in shallow water with surface waves has continued. This new approach to the calculation of underwater sound fields is fast and accurate and can determine waveforms at foci and caustics and in regions of geometric shadow. The model is of interest in underwater communications and experiments are planned. The acoustics of sea urchins and their association with the reef finding ability of some marine species is being studied in collaboration with marine biologists.
